Step-by-Step Guide

How the Calculation Works

Total carbohydrates in a food are the sum of starch, sugars, and fiber. Most food labels express these values per 100 g, which makes scaling straightforward. The core formula used here is:

Serving carbs = (carbs per 100 g × serving weight in g) ÷ 100.

Worked example: A label says brown rice has 23 g of total carbs per 100 g, and you eat 150 g. The calculator computes (23 × 150) ÷ 100 = 34.5 g of whole carbs in that serving. If the same rice has 1.8 g fiber and 0.4 g sugar per 100 g, fiber in the serving is 2.7 g, sugar is 0.6 g, and net carbs are 34.5 − 2.7 = 31.8 g.

Fiber and sugars are scaled with the same density method. Net carbs are whole carbs minus fiber, reflecting the idea that fiber is not fully digested and absorbed. For quick energy planning, this tool multiplies total carbs by 4 kcal/g, the general Atwater factor for carbohydrates. This is an estimate; fiber and sugar alcohols contribute somewhat fewer metabolizable calories.

Whole carbs and total carbs mean the same thing: every carbohydrate in the food, including fiber, sugar, and starch. Net carbs subtract fiber because fiber passes through the digestive tract mostly intact and has little effect on blood sugar in most people.

Reading Nutrition Labels Without Confusion

  • Look for the Total Carbohydrate line first. Fiber and sugars are listed below it as subcomponents; you should never add fiber and sugar to total carbs because they are already included.
  • If Added Sugars is listed separately, that is a subset of total sugars, not an additional carb source.
  • Check whether the label uses per-100 g values or per-serving values. Many countries use per 100 g; the United States uses per serving and per 100 g on the new format.
  • For foods without labels, use a reliable database such as USDA FoodData Central or the calculator on this page with known reference values.
