How It Works

The estimate is built on the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method used in exercise science. One MET is roughly the energy you burn sitting quietly at rest. During exercise, your energy expenditure scales with the intensity of the activity:

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200

Once we know your total calorie burn, we multiply it by an intensity-specific fat usage percentage. At lighter intensities, your body relies more on fat for fuel; as intensity rises, carbohydrates contribute a larger share. The calculator uses these assumptions:

  • Light band work: ~55% of calories from fat
  • Moderate band strength: ~45% of calories from fat
  • Vigorous band intervals: ~30% of calories from fat

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Light band toning: A 140 lb (63.5 kg) person completes 20 minutes of light resistance band mobility work. Using a MET of 3.0, calories per minute = 3.0 × 3.5 × 63.5 ÷ 200 ≈ 3.33.
